Senators give up next to nothing in acquiring Hemsky from Oilers
It certainly wasn't the return most were hoping for but at the end of the day, Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish found a taker for veteran Ales Hesmky during Wednesday's NHL Trade Deadline. In what could ultimately turnout to be the steal of the deadline, at least as far as pure rentals go, the Ottawa Senators acquired the talented Czech winger for a third round pick in 2015 and a fifth round selection in 2014.

Edmonton - March 5, 2014 - It certainly wasn't the return most were hoping for but at the end of the day, Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish found a taker for veteran Ales Hesmky during Wednesday's NHL Trade Deadline.

In what could ultimately turnout to be the steal of the deadline, at least as far as pure rentals go, the Ottawa Senators acquired the talented Czech winger for a third round pick in 2015 and a fifth round selection in 2014. Essentially, GM Bryan Murray was able to add a legitimate top six forward to his roster for nothing more than a hope and a prayer.

From an Oilers perspective, the return for a guy as skilled as Hemsky likely wasn't what they were hoping for but in reality, it was clearly all they could get. As if the trade itself wasn't already tough enough for many fans to stomach, Edmonton ate half of his salary for a couple of mid to late round picks.

As for Senators, they could not have asked to add a better player, while giving up very little. While they still have their issues on the backend, Hemsky could be that winger that Ottawa has been searching to slot in next to Jason Spezza for what seems to be an eternity.
