Western Hockey League

Edmonton - Sep. 21, 2014: On a night in which they celebrated their 2013-14 Championship season, the Edmonton Oil Kings showed a glimpse of the future in their 2014-15 season opener. Andrew Koep scored a pair of goals in his first WHL game and netminder Patrick Dea made 18 saves in leading the defending Western Hockey League and Memorial Cup champs to a 4-2 win over the Kootenay Ice in front of what was the largest home-opening crowd in franchise history. Edmonton - May. 26, 2014: Heading into yesterday’s final against the Guelph Storm, very few if any gave the Edmonton Oil Kings much of a chance of pulling off the upset in the 2014 Memorial Cup Final but considering this team did nothing but defy the odds since coming back from two games down to beat the Portland Winterhawks in the WHL Final, their 6-3 thrashing of the OHL champs should have surprised no one. Edmonton - May. 24, 2014: To say the Edmonton Oil Kings have had a rather eventful week in reaching the 2014 Memorial Cup Final would be understatement. While both Edgars Kulda and Tristan Jarry played major roles in their 4-3 semi-final win over the Val-d’Or Foreurs, it was the core veteran group of Curtis Lazar, Mitch Moroz, Henrik Samuelsson and Griffin Reinhart that carried the mail in London on Friday night. Edmonton - May. 21, 2014: In the grand scheme of things, the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 double OT loss to the Val d'Or Foreurs on Tuesday night may not turn out to be that big of a deal. They still have a chance at taking home the 2014 Memorial Cup but in order for Derek Laxdal's side to have any hope of pulling that off, they will need netinder Tristan Jarry to find his "A" game and quickly. Edmonton - May. 19, 2014: While the opening weekend of the 2014 Memorial Cup may not have gone exactly how the Edmonton Oil Kings had envisioned, head coach Derek Laxdal had to be more than satisfied with the resilience his players showed over their first two games of the tournament. After dropping their opener by a score of 5-2 to the Guelph Storm, the WHL champs bounced back with a 5-2 victory of their own over the host London Knights on Sunday evening. FULL STORY

Edmonton - May. 11, 2014: After building a three goal cushion through two periods of play, the Edmonton Oil Kings were a mere twenty minutes away from clinching their second Western Hockey League crown in three years. Unfortunately for them and the 11,902 in attendance at Rexall Place for Game Six of the WHL Final, the Portland Winterhawks had no intention of rolling over and simply handing over their crown. Edmonton - May. 10, 2014: After fighting their way back into the WHL Final with a pair of workman like performances at Rexall Place, the Edmonton Oil Kings took it to another level on Friday evening in Portland, Oregon. While the importance of last night’s 3-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks cannot be overstated…it was the manner in which they won that was so impressive, leaving them just one win shy of earning their 2nd WHL Championship in three years. Edmonton - May. 8, 2014: Despite dropping the first two games of the 2014 Western Hockey League Final to the Portland Winterhawks, the Edmonton Oil Kings were confident the series would turn back in their favour upon returning home for Games Three and Four at Rexall Place. Last night’s rather convincing 2-0 victory has pulled the Eastern Conference champs back on level terms with Game Five set to go in Portland on Friday night. FULL STORY

Edmonton - May. 7, 2014: The Edmonton Oil Kings come from behind 3-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks in Game Three of their WHL Final was not only a result the home side absolutely had to have but quite frankly, it could turn out to be the defining moment of this series. Edgars Kulda played the role of hero scoring the game-winner and netminder Tristan Jarry rebounded from another shaky start, stopping the final 35 shots he faced. FULL STORY
