Matsos accepts position in Sudbury, Smith promoted to Assistant Coach

The Windsor Spitfires have announced Dave Matsos has accepted a position with the Sudbury Wolves and will become that club's associate coach, effective immediately.

Windsor - July 24, 2013 - The Windsor Spitfires have announced Dave Matsos has accepted a position with the Sudbury Wolves and will become that club's associate coach, effective immediately.

Matsos, 39, spent three seasons with the Spitfires as an assistant coach, joining the club prior to the 2010-11 campaign.

"Dave has represented the Windsor Spitfires very well over the past three seasons, both as a coach and in the community," General Manager Warren Rychel said. "We're proud to see Dave make a move that advances his coaching career. We wish him all the best with his new opportunity in Sudbury."

Team President and Head Coach Bob Boughner says Matsos will be missed.

"Although it's difficult to lose a coach of Dave's quality, this is a great move for him," Boughner said. "He's one of the really good young coaches in our league. The Wolves are getting not only a great hockey man, but a person of great dedication and character. We're happy for Dave and his family."

Matsos compiled a record of 94-88-11-11 in his three seasons behind the Spitfires bench.

He is the second coach to leave the Spitfires in the past two seasons. Former associate coach D.J Smith left the club to become the head coach of the Oshawa Generals in the summer of 2012.

SMITH PROMOTED
In light of this news, the Spitfires are also pleased to announce the club has re-signed Jerrod Smith to a three year contract and promoted him to the position of assistant coach. Smith spent the previous two seasons as the club's video coach. Smith holds a Masters Degree in Sports Administration from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. He played in the OHL for the St. Michaels Majors and spent time playing professional hockey in both Germany and Australia.
