Philadelphia - July 5, 2013 - The Philadelphia Flyers on Friday announced the club has reached an agreement on an eight-year contract extension with team captain Claude Giroux. Terms of the deal were not released, but Comcast Sportsnet reported the deal would have an average annual value of $8.275 million.

"We are pleased to announce that we have agreed to an eight-year contract extension with Claude Giroux," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in announcing the move. "Claude is a high-quality young man that over the past few years has blossomed into our best player and also one of the top players in the League. We look forward to more and better things to come from Claude over the next number of years as we try to achieve our goal of becoming a championship team."

The new contract will start at the beginning of the 2014-15 season. Giroux, 25, will play the final season of his current three-year contract, and will make $3.75 million.

Giroux had 48 points in 48 games in 2012-13, following a season that saw him finish third in the League with 93 points in 77 games, and follow that with 17 points in 10 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

A 2006 first-round draft pick of the Flyers, Giroux has 91 goals and 200 assists in 333 regular-season games, all with the Flyers.
