Windsor - September 21, 2012 - Human Resources Minister Diane Finley is in Windsor today to claim credit for critical border infrastructure built five years late with funding approved by a previous government. The Let’s Get Windsor-Essex Moving Strategy jointly created in by the Province of Ontario under Premier Ernie Eaves and the Federal Government under Prime Minister Jean Chretien government. The process was initiated in 2002 with purpose of the program to reduce congestion in the connecting routes to the border crossing Windsor-Detroit.

The project announced today: Project No. 9 - Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Plaza Master Plan and Improvements - will begin five years after its scheduled completion date in 2007.

Brian Masse (Windsor West) NDP Critic for the Canada-US border remarked: “We’re happy to finally see this long overdue project moving forward. I find it interesting however that the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development is breaking ground for a project scheduled for completion in 2007, and we all know delays at the border cost jobs. Having the highest unemployment numbers in Canada I hope she will have time to consult Windsor and Essex resident about her governments radical changes to EI during her visit.”

Masse hopes that future border projects don’t keep the community waiting for over a decade. “Everyone acknowledges that the Windsor-Detroit corridor is a vital border check point for the North American economy that has tremendous impacts in the community. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another ten years before a we can fully leverage the potential of our border with robust and modern infrastructure that includes passenger rail capacity, reinstating ferry service and ensuring pedestrians and cyclists have options to cross as well.”
