A joint effort brings life to new outdoor rink in Long Sault

Long Sault - December 2, 2011 - Construction of a new outdoor rink measuring approximately 50' x 110' is nearing completion in the Arnold Bethune Memorial Park in Long Sault, a park which is also home to the Long Sault ball diamond, wading pool, playground, and soccer park. 

The project was officially proposed to the Township by Joe Harty on behalf of the South Stormont Flyers Hockey Club, a regular adult recreational group playing out of the Long Sault Arena.

"There was a desire from the team to give something back to the community," said Harty.  "We felt that our club would not only be able to assist with some of the funding but could also contribute the volunteer hours needed to build and operate an outdoor rink of this size."

South Stormont Council approved the project as part of the Parks and Recreation Budget in March, 2011.  Mayor, Bryan McGillis was quick to praise the group.

"Mr. Harty had gathered support from local residents and contractors to help with a project that fits within our overall vision for this community park.....The end result will no doubt create a positive impact on the youth of this community for many years."

The Township was able to supply financial assistance for the materials and installation of a water service,  and local contractors Losey's Haulage and H&J Windmill Construction generously donated their equipment and labourers to assist with initial site preparation.  Both contractors were also involved with the Flyers Hockey Club and student volunteers to help assemble the rink on November 26. 

It is hoped that the success of the project will lead to future consideration for electrical upgrades to the park that would allow for permanent lights, a small shelter for tying skates, and even a paved surface that would extend the use of the rink to summer activities.  When Harty was asked about plans for the rink he replied "positive feedback and suggestions from the community has been overwhelming, there is no doubt that our hockey club will continue to fundraise and work with the township to seek opportunities for future improvements".
