Cornwall - December 1, 2011 - Paul Dewar, the NDP M.P. for Ottawa-Centre, is the first NDP leadership candidate to visit the riding of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. Dewar attended a Meet and Greet reception on Nov. 29 in Cornwall at the home of local NDP riding association President Brian Lynch.

Dewar in his bilingual remarks to the 40 NDP supporters in attendance outlined his plans for good jobs, a fairer taxation system, the environment, public healthcare and home care, and fighting poverty. Invoking the memory of Jack Layton, Dewar said that we need to take better care of each other.

Regarding the deplorable, third world living conditions in Attawapiskat and other First Nations reserves, Dewar stated: "We have to commit ourselves to make sure that every reserve in this country and every First Nations person has affordable housing, affordable power, clean water, and education."

Lynch in his introduction of Dewar praised Dewar for his ability to bring people together to build a better life for their families and communities. He also commented that Dewar has been generous with his time to help the NDP riding associations in Eastern Ontario including SD&SG to raise money and to grow their membership.

Lynch stated: "Paul's experience as a very effective, articulate member of Parliament, his grassroots approach to building the NDP, and his vision and plans for a stronger, more caring Canada make him an ideal person to lead the NDP to victory in the next federal election."

The Federal NDP leadership convention will take place in Toronto on March 23-24, 2012. To date, there are nine leadership candidates. Every member of the NDP prior to Feb. 18, 2012 will be eligible to vote for the new party leader. Lynch explained that they may do so in one of three ways: mail-in ballot, internet ballot, or in person as a delegate at the convention. Anyone who wishes to join the SD&SG NDP riding association should call 613-933-8353.

The first NDP leadership debate will take place on Sunday Dec. 4 from 2 P.M.- 4 P.M. in Ottawa at the Ottawa Convention Centre, 55 Colonel By Drive.
