Cornwall - November 17, 2011 - Author Mike Nickerson will be guest speaker at a public meeting about a sustainable future for Cornwall and area. The event, hosted by Transition Cornwall+, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28th at the Ramada Inn on Brookdale Avenue.

The big news stories of our times - whether about fuel costs, climate change, fresh water, population growth, endangered species or wealth distribution - all indicate that the human presence is stressing our planet.

According to speaker Mike Nickerson, only one generation of continued economic growth at the current pace would double the amount of stress on the planet.

“Most people sense the problems this would cause and would like society to acknowledge them and learn to live within our planet’s bounds”.

Mr. Nickerson's presentation will show how current global circumstances can lead to a new, local economic and social order and will describe some of the promising opportunities that await our collective decision to respect planetary limits.

Mike Nickerson is a consummate storyteller, weaving together personal anecdotes with his deep understanding of the issues, based on 35 years of research on cultural evolution and sustainability. The Lanark, Ontario resident has written three books on sustainability, including Life, Money and Illusion: Living on Earth as if we want to stay. He has spoken to hundreds of groups around North America, about the need to abandon our belief in an economic model based on continual growth.

Over the past year, Transition Cornwall+ has organized numerous film screenings and presentations aimed at increasing local awareness of the combined issues of climate change, peak oil and global economic instability.

The group has also hosted work bees and monthly Green Drinks nights to build a community of concern about these issues. Over 70 people attended their latest event, a screening of the film Powerful, suggesting a growing interest in sustainability in the region.

Oil, Climate and the Local Economy is the first Transition Cornwall+ event to focus specifically on economic sustainability. The event is sponsored by the Eastern Ontario Training Board. Admission is free, donations to Transition Cornwall+ will be gratefully accepted.
