Crime Prevention Week - Police warn of Items for Sale Fraud

The Cornwall Community Police Service would like to make the public aware of potential frauds and scams involving persons advertising items for sale. Items can be advertised for sale in various papers and/or online sources. The items are listed way below the actual value of the item.

Cornwall - Nov. 10, 2011 - The Cornwall Community Police Service would like to make the public aware of potential frauds and scams involving persons advertising items for sale.

Items can be advertised for sale in various papers and/or online sources. The items are listed way below the actual value of the item. The transaction of the item for sale is on the condition of sight-unseen until delivery. If contacted, the seller usually will provide a hard luck story for the reason of the low sale price.

The seller makes it clear they are in a location out of country and the item being sold is stored in another location. Prospective buyers are usually told that their money is insured so if anything should happen they will get their money back after filling out a form. Arrangements are then made to have the item shipped and to split the delivery cost. Now the seller will request that the purchaser to wire the money. After the money is wired the end result can often lead to no item ever being delivered.

The Cornwall Community Police Service would like to remind you that you can lessen your chances of becoming a victim by following some simple guidelines and practicing due diligence.
