Brockville - Nov. 2, 2011 - Two major projects undertaken by the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) have captured national attention at the annual CACE BRAVO! Awards presentations. The Director’s Annual Report Video - Surging Forward and the e-newsletter Principal PR were both recognized by the annual conference of the Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE).
“CACE presented us with the highest BRAVO! recognition, the Award of Excellence, for each of these projects. Both projects also won awards of excellence earlier this year in the international APEX Awards for Publications Excellence,” outlined Director of Communications Terry Simzer.
The judges’ comments for the Director’s Video were:
“Professional well executed plan! Hits the mark, focused, directly applicable.”
The judges’ comments for the Principal PR submission were:
"Hits the mark, focused, directly applicable."
"Detailed goals and objectives, outlined explicitly, well-supported conclusions."
With this year’s presentations the Upper Canada District School Board has earned eighteen CACE BRAVO! Awards since 2001.
The Director’s Report video was produced by the board’s communications team of Simzer, Communications Officer Mark Calder and School Communications Specialist Allison Grange in conjunction with videographer Jim Brodie of James Brodie Productions, Inc.
Principal PR was produced by School Communications Specialist Allison Grange.
The Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE) was established in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1984, as a result of an initiative of the Association of Large School Boards in Ontario, (later called the Ontario Public School Boards Association - OPSBA), and with organizational assistance from the Canadian Education Association (CEA).
The major goal of the new organization was to provide networking opportunities for its members and acknowledge their contributions to the success of the educational system in Canada.
A bilingual organization, CACE represents communications professionals who work in private and publicly-funded school boards, colleges and universities, teachers’ associations, and government departments and ministries.
The UCDSB also won awards in the international APEX Awards for Publications Excellence competition (see http://www.apexawards.com).
The video Advanced Instructional Tools won a rare APEX Grand Award. Of the more than 3,300 entries in the competition, only 100 Grand Awards were presented. The judges’ comments were:
“Wow! An impressive video presentation of impressive classroom technology. 'We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto!'"
The UCDSB also won three APEX Awards of Excellence for its video ‘Wellness for All’, its video ‘Perth Schools’, and for its Director’s Annual Report to the Community video ‘Surging Forward’.
Simzer is particularly proud of winning a fourth consecutive APEX Award for the Director’s Annual Report video. “We are one of very few school boards in North America to produce an annual report on video. While it is a huge undertaking, it provides an impressive overview of the numerous successes by students and staff at Upper Canada.” The video is available for viewing on the Board’s Web site at www.ucdsb.on.ca.
