The Insolent Enemy, recounts many tales of the War of 1812

David Butters has written a book, the Insolent Enemy, on the War of 1812. In his book he talks about Captain Benjamin Forsyth of the 1st US Regiment of Rifles, the first American Army unit sent to the border. He also details the raid that happened in Gananoque, Ontario.

Kirksville - Oct. 19, 2011 - I lived last year in Clayton, NY and I became interested in Captain Benjamin Forsyth of the 1st US Regiment of Rifles, the first American Army unit sent to the border. They were an elite troop of marksmen and frontiersmenarmed with the best weapon the USA could manufacture, the Harper's Ferry Rifle.

One of their first raids was on Ganonoque, home of Joel Stone, a United Empire Loyalist. Following the success of this raid, they swept into Brockville to free American prisoners jailed there. My book, the Insolent Enemy, recounts the tale of these raids and the rest of the exploits of this unit in the War of 1812. I think the reader will find some interesting facts based on my research.

Vacationing in Gananoque for the most of two summers, I walked the paths that Forsyth took as he entered Gananoque. In fact he could now golf there, the landing site being near the golf course. I think there is a rich heritage in the area, as rich as any site in the rest of Canada and memories should be stirred by the deeds of our forebears.
