Suzuki To Make Virtual Visit To Tagwi Secondary School

Tagwi Secondary School students will participate in the David Suzuki Virtual Classroom on November 2.

Avonmore - Oct. 14, 2011 - David Suzuki is coming to Tagwi Secondary School - at least virtually.

The famous author, television host and environmentalist will visit the school November 2 via the World Wide Web as Tagwi students participate in the David Suzuki Virtual Classroom, said Tagwi teacher Sarah Menard.

Suzuki will discuss the new National Film Board production about his life entitled Force of Nature. Fifty Tagwi students, along with peers from across Canada, will be able to ask Suzuki questions about his life as well as about issues such as consumption, sustainable development, technology and the future of the planet.

Menard hopes that giving students a chance to talk with the environmentalist will inspire them to follow in his footsteps.

"I think in this day and age we need to have an awareness of our limited resources," said Menard. "David Suzuki is not going to live forever, and we need to have new environmentalists in place to keep us aware and to carry on Suzuki's mission."

The film discusses Suzuki's life from his Japanese family's internment in the Second World War to his days broadcasting about environmental issues such as the liquidation of the Bluefin tuna population. Students participating in the virtual classroom will have watched the movie to prepare for the session with Suzuki.

The Tagwi students in Grades 7-8 and 10-12 will participate in the virtual classroom between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
