Upper Canada District School Board students continue to improve EQAO results

Results released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) confirm Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) students in grades 3, 6 and 9 continue to improve. UCDSB Grade 3 and Grade 6 results have increased steadily over the last three years in the areas of Reading and Writing.

Brockville - Sep. 17, 2011 - Results released today by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) confirm Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) students in grades 3, 6 and 9 continue to improve: For example:

UCDSB Grade 3 and Grade 6 results have increased steadily over the last three years in the areas of Reading and Writing.

UCDSB Grade 3 Writing results have increased 9 percentage points over the last three years and are now at the Provincial target of 75% of students achieving levels 3 or 4.

UCDSB Grade 3 results are above the Provincial results in Writing and equal to the Provincial results in Reading and Mathematics.

Just like the trend in the Provincial results, one area for us to investigate is in the area of Junior Mathematics. The UCDSB Grade 6 Mathematics results have declined over a three year period.

Over the past three years, UCDSB has been focusing on improving teaching and learning in the areas of Reading and Writing and we are encouraged with our improvement efforts in these areas. We plan to conduct a review in the area of Mathematics. We will be looking at the teaching and learning of all students as well as paying attention to specific sub-populations of students such as English Language Learners and students with special needs.

“We are very impressed with the accomplishments of our students who have worked hard to prepare for these assessments,” said Director of Education David Thomas.

“As our students maintain and improve upon their EQAO results, it confirms that we are providing the supports to ensure they succeed as we move toward our long-term goal of a 90 per cent graduation rate by 2020,” said UCDSB Associate Director Ian Carswell.

Carswell cautions that EQAO assessments are but one tool the Board uses to support student learning and the results are but a snapshot of our achievements.

“Ongoing assessment of a student’s performance by his/her teachers, and the use of this data to inform instruction and next steps, remain an essential method of achieving gains and improvements in learning,” said Carswell.
