Glen Walter - Aug. 25, 2011 - More than 120 kids from the Cornwall, Brockville and Chesterville areas descended on Glen Walter Regional Park Tuesday for the first annual ReadE for Summer Jamboree.

The event offered students in the Upper Canada District School Board’s (UCDSB) popular summer educational camp a variety of activities ranging from scavenger hunts to human foosball, said Program Coordinator Dave Corney.

“The goal of the day was to celebrate the tremendous success of our ReadE for Summer camp," explained Corney. “We wanted a way to bring all of our students together to enjoy fun activities, to make new friends from other cities, and to create fond memories.”

Activities included Zumba fitness classes, carnival games, a snow cone station, art activities, and an inflatable obstacle course.

Two of the most popular attractions for the students were a magic show and a “human foosball” game. Magician Antony Lee kept the children spellbound with everything from escape tricks to accurately predicting the card a student pulled from his magician’s deck. The most entertaining part of the act was a miniature guillotine trick in which Lee pretended to slice the wrist of a willing student, and somehow saw his blade bypass the limb but still cut a tiny carrot in a hole below it. Students also entered an inflatable soccer field in which they were tethered like tabletop foosball players and enjoyed a game of “human foosball” with a soccer ball.

Students said they had a blast at the jamboree and have enjoyed the summer program as a whole.

“It has made my summer a lot better,” said Tyler Kelly of Cornwall. “I’ve been able to do more sports. I’m usually sitting at home (during the summer breaks) doing nothing.”

The ReadE for Summer program is being offered in Cornwall, Chesterville and Brockville to students aged 6 to 12 from July 4 to August 26. The free day camp, run in partnership among the Upper Canada District School Board, Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training, and the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/ SDG, provides entertaining activities such as craft sessions, movie days, and trips to Upper Canada Village, combined with educational games and activities designed to keep students’ math and language skills sharp over the summer months.
