McGuinty announces expansion plans for University Ottawa Heart Institute

Ontario is expanding access to state-of-the-art cardiac care for families in the Ottawa region. Premier Dalton McGuinty was at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute today to announce plans for a major expansion and renovation of the Cardiac Life Support Services.
Ottawa - Aug. 25, 2011 - Ontario is expanding access to state-of-the-art cardiac care for families in the Ottawa region.
Premier Dalton McGuinty was at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute today to announce plans for a major expansion and renovation of the Cardiac Life Support Services. Six new cardiac intensive care unit beds, an additional operating room and other improvements will help reduce wait times and ensure more people have access to the services they need to stay healthy.
Providing better access to care for people with heart conditions is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to provide better, faster care for Ontarians. Other achievements include cutting wait times - now the lowest in Canada - and ensuring that over a million more Ontarians have a family doctor.
“We’re going to continue building a stronger health care system by improving services and tackling wait times. Keeping our families healthy means a stronger community here in Ottawa and a stronger Ontario,” said Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario
“I know how important this expansion is to our community and I’m proud to see it move forward. For Ottawans, this redevelopment means faster and easier access to high quality health care much closer to home,” said Yasir Naqvi, MPP Ottawa Centre.
“We are grateful to Ontario for recognizing the importance of the Heart Institute to health care, and not just in the region but across the province and beyond. With this announcement we are building the future of the Heart Institute so we can advance treatment of heart disease and the search for a cure,” said Dr. Robert Roberts, CEO and President, University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
“Today’s announcement is so very meaningful, both to me personally but more importantly, to patients with heart disease and their families from across Ottawa and the surrounding Champlain region. The capital investment will certainly improve health outcomes for patients. It will also allow the Heart Institute to build on its global reputation of excellence in the areas of prevention, treatment and research,” said Dr. Wilbert Keon, Board Chair of the Champlain LHIN and founder of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
QUICK FACTS
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is the only stand alone cardiac hospital in the province and is the cardiac centre for eastern Ontario.
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute will work in conjunction with the Ottawa Hospital as it plans for the future redevelopment of the Civic Campus.
Ontario has invested in over 100 major hospital capital projects since 2003. This includes 18 brand new hospitals that are either completed or in development.
The McGuinty government will be investing more than $35 billion in hospitals, public transit, schools, highways and other projects over the next three years as part of Building Together, Ontario’s long-term infrastructure plan.
