Cornwall - Jul. 19, 2011 - City crews have worked diligently to repair the watermain on Water Street which ruptured shortly after 12 pm on Monday, July 18. As a result of the rupture, Water Street is closed to traffic between York and Sydney Streets and the water service had been shut off to Cornwall Square, the Cornwall Civic Complex, Aquatic Centre and the RCAFA Wing 424.

Cornwall Square re-opened for business at 11:00 am this morning. The shopping centre was unable to operate without a potable water supply and had closed yesterday afternoon at 4:00 pm.

City crews have been on site since the break occurred and have worked throughout the night to repair the watermain. The watermain will be tested and flushed with chlorine before it is reconnected to the water distribution network. Workers repaired the broken pipe with a welded patch, but as of mid-day it was determined that there were “pin-hole” leaks developing. As such, the City is making plans to completely replace a section of pipe on Thursday evening after 11:00 pm. Water will once again be shut down in the affected areas.

Property owners in the area south of Second Street from Brookdale Avenue to Marlborough Street may experience discoloured water at their taps. This is due to the change in water direction within the distribution system. Residents may encounter this problem over the next 24 hours and are advised to let the tap run until the water clears before using the water. Once the water is clear, it is okay to drink and do laundry.

Water Street (eastbound between York and Sydney Streets) will reopen to traffic later this afternoon. Water Street (westbound between Sydney and York Streets) will remain closed until at least Wednesday evening.
