Handi Transit Bus Service to South Stormont
City Council approved a motion by Councillor David Murphy to fulfil a request by a Cornwall resident to be transported to the School of Elegance at 113 Cornwall Center Road which is located on the property of South Stormont. She enrolled in a program at the school which offers her a unique opportunity not available within the City. “It's a common sense approach. It's just another twelve feet. There is a City bus stop near by, but with this person accessibility is an issue”, says Murphy. Councillor Bernadette Clément was concerned about South Stormont paying their fair share for City services. Councillor Elaine MacDonald enquired about insurance cost. According to Norm Levac insurance would only go up slightly. According to City Management this Handi-Transit service is beneficial to Cornwall residents with disabilities, and this exception will benefit a Cornwall resident.
Temporary Street Closure for the 2nd Annual Sounds of Buskerville
A motion by Glen Grant to temporary close second Street for the 2nd Annual Sounds of Buskerville festival was seconded by Councillor Bernadette Clément, and the motion was passed without debate. Chad Colmen is organizing The 2nd Annual Sounds of Buskerville on Saturday July 30th. It is going to be a day of music, art, food, and fun. It is also a fundraiser for the OSPCA. Donations of money and supplies are welcomed including clay cat litter, dry kitten and puppy food, blankets, wood shavings, rabbit food, rodent food, cleaning supplies, and office supplies. Benson Centre
City Council examined the Staffing Review at the Benson Centre. There were four part time jobs created, but there are now concerns over security, and the need for full time possitions. According to Christine Lefebvre, Division Manager of Parks & Recreation, “Zumba classes in the soccer field are very popular. This has been a surprisingly busy summer. Full time staff can be given more responsibilities and it will not cost much more than benefits”. Councillor Syd Gardiner says, “we need to protect our investment and make sure our staffing is adequate”.
There was also a presentation by Scott Lecky discussing Soccer Field requirements at the Benson Centre. According to Lecky 2.67 million in fund-raising has been done, including a recently announced $150,000 donated by Seaway Valley and The Kinsmen Club. Lecky suggests two soccer fields. “I nudge Council to use those excess dollars to top off the Benson Centre with marquee fields”.
Thibault addresses City Council about Culturescape
Councillor Denis Thibault reported about a special presentation held at the Civic Complex on June 28th about the Cultural Plan. According to Thibault, “A healthy and vibrant arts and culture sector will boost tourism and help us attract new residents. The report identifies clear possibilities including developing a new arts centre and bringing local interest groups together under one common Arts Council. These are also not tasks solely within the City's domain. We need willing partners in the Townships, as well as the community itself”. City Administration will write a report for Council to debate at the next meeting on August 8th.
