Maxville - Jul. 8, 2011 - Every year for the past sixty-four years, the Glengarry Highland Games has welcomed tens of thousands to the tiny farming village of Maxville and one of the best celtic events in North America. Home of the North American Pipe Band Championship, the Games attracts some of the continent’s finest pipers and drummers to its competitions especially this year with an increase in prize money. Added to that, over 200 Highland dancers along with heavyweight competitions for all ages and skill round out a full slate of traditional Scottish events.

This is a special year at the Games when all Scots are invited to come celebrate “The Year of the Clans” and cheer on their tartan in Saturday’s Clan Parade which is hoped to be the biggest ever at the Games. Everyone who attends the Games is encouraged to proudly wear a piece of tartan and join in the many special events that will celebrate the importance of the Clans and the Scots in the history of Glengarry and Canada.

The Games are also known for showcasing great celtic entertainment, both local and from afar. This year’s Friday night Tattoo headliners are the celebrated Cape Breton family group, The Barra MacNeils, who will lead off an evening of pageantry and music climaxing in the best fireworks of the summer. Many of Glengarry’s favourite celtic entertainers will be performing both Friday, July 29th and Saturday, July 30th at different venues around the spacious site. For those who enjoy Scottish Fiddling, the Games offer a Junior Showcase on Friday afternoon and two Scottish Fiddle workshops on Saturday with Stan Chapman from Nova Scotia. A new event this year invites all harpists to join a harp workshop offered on Friday morning.

The Games offers something for everyone and some of the best Scottish shopping and food can be found at its many concessions. The site is fully accessible and has many shady areas for relaxing and enjoying the events. For full details on this year’s Games, check out GlengarryHighlandGames.com. Come and join us and celebrate all things Scottish, Friday, July 29th and Saturday, July 30th in Maxville, Ontario, Canada.
