Cornwall - Jun. 6, 2011 - Cornwall Transit will be offering free rides to the public on June 8 to help celebrate Clean Air Day.

City residents will be able to ride on the transit service’s environmentally-friendly buses free of charge all day long. The service runs from 6:00 am to 11:30 pm.

“Clean Air Day is a great opportunity to help the environment and save money,” said Jason Setnyk, Chair of the Cornwall Transit Committee. “The cost of maintaining and running a car is $8,000 annually, yet the cost of riding the bus all year long is less than $700. With the rising cost of gas, it makes sense to give Cornwall Transit a try.”

Cornwall Transit Manager Len Tapp is excited to have the public try out the new buses.

“Our new buses are not only convenient by having low floors and a bike rack, but they are also equipped with regeneration systems that reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions,” said Mr. Tapp. “The buses will save money and will help us reduce our impact on the environment.”

This will mark the fifth year that Cornwall Transit has participated in the Clean Air Day initiative. As part of the event, Cornwall Transit has partnered with Corus Entertainment to have a group of “Secret Riders” who will be randomly handing out monthly bus passes throughout the day.

Cornwall Transit operates 6 conventional bus routes, 2 Community Service routes and 36 daily hours of Handi-Transit service and morning and evening Industrial routes. There are more than 240 Cornwall Transit bus stops located throughout the City, allowing citizens to travel to most locations around Cornwall within 30 minutes.

Cornwall Transit handled 738,000 paid trips in 2010, including 36,000 trips made by persons with disabilities.
