Cornwall - May. 18, 2011 - Prime Minister Harper announced his new cabinet today at Rideau Hall. Many of the same faces have returned to cabinet. Jim Flaherty remains on as Finance Minister and Ottawa West Nepean MP has been appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Baird replaces Lawrence Cannon who was defeated on May 2nd.
This cabinet is tied with a former Mulroney government cabinet as the largest with 39. Prior to the election, Harper had 38 members of cabinet.
Tony Clement moves from the industry ministry to become President of the Treasury Board. Peter MacKay remains on as Defence Minister. Quebec MP Maxime Bernier is back in cabinet after a long exile and was named Minister of State for Small Business.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda, Agricultural Minister Gerry Ritz, and Environment Minister Peter Kent all remain in their same posting. Peter Van Loan follows in Baird's footsteps as Government House Leader.
There are nine new members in this cabinet.
Yesterday, Vancouver.24hrs.ca reported that Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon may be rewarded with his first cabinet position. "Four-term winner Guy Lauzon could find a junior agriculture spot to represent eastern Ontario", states their article. This prediction did not come to fruition.
It is expected that Lauzon will hear in the next couple of days as to whether or not he will continue in his role as Caucus Chair.
