Ottawa - Aug. 8, 2011 - On May 2, 2011 the people of Canada elected a strong, stable, conservative majority government. They did so in part because of the "tough on crime" agenda included in our election platform. Part of that platform promises to weed out the criminals that have abused our immigration process. One key element of our crime agenda is that individuals must accept responsibility for their actions. In other words, if a person commits a serious crime they should serve serious time.

Just a few weeks ago our government published the names and photos of 30 people living illegally in Canada. All of these 30 individuals have been accused of committing crimes against humanity or criminal acts of war in their country of origin. We are not talking about shop lifting or minor infractions here. To be labelled a war criminal, one must commit very heinous crimes. However, when entering Canada, they conveniently forgot to tell us about these accusations. They lied about their past to immigration officials in order to enter Canada.

Most of these individuals have been ordered deported from Canada on numerous occasions. They have simply appealed each and every decision, thereby delaying their deportation for months or years, or they have gone underground here in Canada. Our government feels strongly that we do not need people like this in our country. We currently have over 600,000 legitimate, law abiding, hard working immigrants waiting for a chance to come to Canada. I believe these people should be our priority.

In the few days since publishing the list of these 30 individuals and asking Canadians for help in locating them, CBSA officials have arrested six. Already we have located 20% of them. As a result, our country is much safer. Now we must locate the other 24, and have them deported so law abiding Canadians can continue to enjoy the safety and security we deserve.
