McGuinty gets it wrong on energy
For the last 18 months, Dalton McGuinty and company have been touting the Green Energy Act, the jobs it will supposedly create, and the energy it will supposedly generate. The Samsung contract reveals that only 900 jobs are actually promised, so it is little wonder they tried to keep the deal secret.

Lancaster - Aug. 5, 2011 - For the last 18 months, Dalton McGuinty and company have been touting the Green Energy Act, the jobs it will supposedly create, and the energy it will supposedly generate.

Now the truth starts to emerge. This week, on the 4th of August, at noon on a windy day, Ontario was consuming just over 19,000 megawatts of electricity. Of that, wind supplied just 54 megawatts, or 0.0028%. The wholesale cost in the province at noon was 3.7 cents per kilowatt, but Dalton McGuinty was paying between 40 and 80 cents for wind power. It is no wonder power rates in Ontario are up by 150% since 2003.

Ah, but the Liberals tell us that 16,000 jobs are to be created and that many are already here. Where, you ask? Not in Windsor, Tillsonburg, or anywhere else. The Samsung contract reveals that only 900 jobs are actually promised, so it is little wonder they tried to keep the deal secret.

This week’s change to the Samsung Deal highlights McGuinty’s desperation. He allowed a huge financial penalty to be added to the contract should a new PC government choose to modify or cancel the contract. As a further indication of his lack of credibility on energy, he wrongly claimed this week that Ontario uses more power today than ever. In his Long Term Energy Plan (page 13), he states that “electricity demand in Ontario has declined since reaching its peak in 2003.” Which is it?

Ontario’s energy use has actually dropped in recent years because Dalton McGuinty’s skyrocketing hydro bills have helped devastate our manufacturing industry and resulted in the loss of 300,000 high paying manufacturing jobs. If Dalton McGuinty’s expensive energy experiments are allowed to continue, it will only get worse.

After eight years in power, Dalton McGuinty can no longer cover up the mismanagement, the secret deals to his friends, and out-of-control spending. The people of Ontario are looking for better days ahead, when they can once again be proud of Ontario’s stature in Canada and when Ontario is again a “Have” province in confederation. They are looking for change under a Tim Hudak Progressive Conservative government, and for better days ahead.
