Oakville - August 1, 2015 - Have you heard the saying “what’s old is new”? This saying holds true with current eyewear trends: retro bold frames, oversize, and dark with pops of colour. Frames that enhance ones look is the perfect statement piece.

Over the years, there has been a vast progression in style trends and necessity intertwines with “accessory” allowing our eyewear to be both stylish, fun, and, of course, helping us to see. Trends are continuously changing with the times and the seasons, giving us plenty of room to play and change up our wardrobes, glasses included.

The 80’s were a time of large oversized glasses with tinted pink and blue lenses embellished with crystals and initial stickers. The 90’s were a time of neon colours, carbon fibre frames that were patterned with splashes of paint, polka dots and patterns. The year 2000 saw frame styles get smaller and narrow taking on a minimalist look. This brings us to present day.

The trend of “what’s old is new” is true to its word. Retro plastic styles that echo the “Buddy Holly” look, cat eye, horn rimmed, oversized “bold” frames with hints of colour from behind are splattered all over optical boards. Some styles like Rayban are exactly the same frame from over 20 years ago.

Now is the time to look for plastic frames, which are light and comfortable but most don’t have nose pads, so be sure the fit across the bridge of your nose is perfect. New materials such as surgical steel and graphite bring an edgy accent to the modern retro look without being bulky. Designer versus non designers, both are relevant in trendy styles.

Glasses become a statement piece reflecting personality and style while at the same time the larger sizes provide functionality for those wearing multifocal progressive or even the increasingly popular computer multifocal.

Space optical has brought trends in frames and technology in lenses for close to 40 years. Beginning in one generation with owner Nicky Pala and passing it onto the next generation with daughter Denise Pala. It is an established business with a new fresh style. While recognizing how styles and trends change, there is always the right frame to make each customer feel special, comfortable and like themselves. Yes glasses sometimes are a necessity, but why not have a little fun with what you choose and enjoy wearing your glasses. Let your style and personality shine.
