Contract Awarded For Construction Of New Low-Level Bridge
Crews work on the piers for the now low-level bridge crossing between Cornwall and Cornwall Island.

Cornwall - Oct. 9, 2011 - The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited announces today that a contract has been awarded for the second of four phases in the construction of a new low-level bridge to replace the old structure between Cornwall and Cornwall Island in Ontario.

The first phase of the project (Contract 1: In Water Works) is progressing well and will be completed on schedule. Contract 2 will involve the design and construction of the new low-level span of the North Channel Bridge and its approaches.

A public tendering process led to the selection of the winning bid on October 6.

The contract was awarded to Aecon Construction and Material Limited (ACML), the lowest bidder. ACML is a firm specialized in building complex highway infrastructure, airfields projects, residential and commercial developments, landfills, bridges and other major types of infrastructure projects.

ACML will mobilize this Fall and the construction of the new bridge and its approaches will be completed by early 2013 and incorporate new concrete and reinforcing technology developed in partnership with the National Research Council (NRC) and the design team.

The next two phases (Contract 3: Demolition of the existing bridge and Contract 4: Brookdale Avenue and Water Street realignment) will each be the subject of a future competitive tender. The complete project is expected to be completed by 2016.
