Work set to begin on new low-level bridge project

American Bridge Canada Company is now mobilizing on site in preparation for the 'in water works' phase of the low-level bridge project.

Cornwall - May. 4, 2011 - Work on the new low-level bridge crossing in Cornwall is set to begin with the 'in water works' phase of the project.

The scope of work includes the construction of three new bridge piers in the north channel of the St. Lawrence River.

American Bridge Canada Company was selected by public tender as the contractor for the 'in water works,' and the company has begun mobilizing on the site, the Federal Bridge Corporation recently announced.

The $75-million project will consist of four contracts in total and will extend from the Brookdale Avenue traffic circle in Cornwall to the Seaway bridge administrative buildings on Cornwall Island.

After the "in-water" portion of the project is completed, the next steps will include construction of the new bridge and approaches, demolition of the existing high-level crossing and finally, the realignment of Brookdale Avenue and Water Street - where the new bridge will connect.

The entire project is expected to be completed by 2016.

The next phase of the project was recently put out to tender, with the closing date set for June 27.
