OUR PAST - Central Park pool kept many Cornwallites cool
Cornwall - May. 4, 2011 - Decades before the splashpad opened in Lamoureux Park, local youths had another spot to cool down during the warm summer months.
The Central Park pool, seen here, first opened in 1930, and it served local youths well for several decades before closing in the late 1960s.
Before the creation of Lamoureux Park, Central Park was Cornwall's flagship community park. Along with the pool, the park also housed a bandshell for outdoor performances, and it was also the venue for the popular Mayor Horovitz's Picnic events through the 1940s and 1950s.
The park was eventually renamed in honour of the late mayor, and the greenspace has been greatly altered since then with the construction of the Cornwall Square and Chevrier Building and the reconstruction of Sydney Street.
