OUR PAST - Cornwall Armoury a symbol of city
Cornwall - Apr. 27, 2011 - Each week, OurHometown.ca posts an old photo from our area. This week we are featuring a photo postcard of the Cornwall Armoury on Fourth Street East.
The majestic building remains one of the great landmarks in Cornwall, undisturbed by time.
According to Ian Bowering's book Cornwall, From Factory Town to Seaway City, the cornerstone for the $250,000 building was laid on Sept. 15, 1939 by local MP Lionel Chevrier and Lt.-Col. G.D. Gillie.
In 1940, a 35-acre basic training camp opened to the north of the armoury, and in the next four years, roughly 15,000 soldiers went through a basic military training course at the site.
The armoury is home to the S, D and G Highlanders, one of the most distinguished and historic military units in the country.
