London - August 10, 2012 - Surrey, BC’s Richard Weinberger put some splash in Canada’s medal count Friday with a bronze-medal performance in the men’s 10,000m open water swim. Just 5.2 seconds off the gold medal over the demanding distance, Weinberger finished in 1:50:00.5 seconds in his Olympic debut, boosting Canada to 17 medals on Day 14 of the Games.

“It was an extremely physical race,” said Weinberger. “That’s why I avoided being in the pack and tried to be on the outside or up there with Mellouli. I wanted to have a smart race and things turned out in my favour.”

“Richard came into this race ranked among the best in the world in this event, and he delivered” said 2012 Chef de Mission Mark Tewksbury. “After close to two hours in the water, there was a tight sprint to the finish, and Richard gave his everything. He truly earned this bronze medal.”

“The hard work and dedication needed to swim that far, that fast, is unbelievable,” said Assistant Chef de Mission Sylvie Bernier. “Richard’s hard work and dedication to his sport has paid off today with a podium performance.”

“We are all so proud of Richard Weinberger and what he has done today,” said Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee. “He has demonstrated the traits that make our Canadian Olympians so great: hard work, dedication and, above all, excellence.”
