Senators give another game away, Losing streak now at 4 games
In a game they desperately needed to win, the Ottawa Senators badly outplayed the New York Rangers, only to lose on two horrible giveaways. The Senators out shot the Rangers 31-19 in the game (21-11 after 2 periods) and deserved to win. First veteran Sergei Gonchar and then rookie David Rundblad, made blind back passes in their own zone to New York Ranger players.

Ottawa - Nov. 10, 2011 - In a game they desperately needed to win, the Ottawa Senators badly outplayed the New York Rangers, only to lose on two horrible giveaways. The Senators out shot the Rangers 31-19 in the game (21-11 after 2 periods) and deserved to win. First veteran Sergei Gonchar and then rookie David Rundblad, made blind back passes in their own zone to New York Ranger players, hanging goaltender Craig Anderson out to dry.

Reminiscent of the Montreal Canadiens game on Friday night, the Senators gave this game away. These weren’t the only giveaways either. Erik Karlsson gave the puck away on a number of occasions and Jason Spezza turned the puck over, which eventually led to a three on one for the Rangers. Thankfully the Rangers never scored on that one.

The Senators now play their next six games and nine of their next ten games on the road. With road games in Edmonton, Pittsburgh and Washington, not to mention Buffalo, it will be an uphill climb for the Senators to get points on the road. That’s what made the last 3 games at home important. In those three games, the Senators gained one point and the winning streak they had now seems long gone.

Daniel Alfredsson

The loss of their captain Daniel Alfredsson is finally having a huge impact on this team. Not only are they missing Alfredsson’s leadership, but his confidence and ability to read the play have turned a number of games in the Senators favor. Alfredsson has single-handedly turned a couple of games in the Senators favor. Not counting the Rangers game, in which he was hurt and the Senators came back to win, the Senators are 1-4 without him. The remaining veterans need to step up if the team has any hope of at least competing for a playoff spot.

Parting Shots

  • Liked the Zenon Konopka-Sean Avery fight. Konopka got the better of Avery and smacked him a few times. I was sad to see it end and was left wishing Konopka could smack him some more.

  • Jarred Cowen did well in his first NHL fight, handling himself well in a fight with a regular NHL heavyweight.

  • The puck is still bouncing like crazy all over the Scotiabank ice.

  • Craig Anderson still has not stolen a game for the Senators yet.

  • Earning 17 points in 18 games, the Senators have so far exceeded what the experts thought. So why are we feeling a little disappointed about it?
