Canada thumps Denmark 10-2
The round robin portion of the World Junior Championships can at times be a little much to watch and last night's 10-2 drubbing of Denmark was a perfect example. The win puts Canada atop Group B with a 3-0 record heading into their yearly New Year's Eve battle with Team USA.

Edmonton - December 30, 2011 - The round robin portion of the World Junior Championships can at times be a little much to watch and last night's 10-2 drubbing of Denmark was a perfect example. While it's great that Team Canada went out and pummeled their opposition as everyone expected, it doesn't show us anything that would help determine if this team will be ready to go against the likes of Russia, Sweden and the USA.

Having said that, the setup is what it is and Canada still has to play their games and they delivered the goods against a badly over-matched Denmark squad. Canada were led by a four point night from Scott Harrington and three point efforts from Brandon Gormley and Quinton Howden en route to their third straight victory to open the 2012 Championships.

Canada opened the scoring just 2:34 in, when Howden was sent in all alone on a beautiful stretch pass from Harrington and the forward made no mistake giving Canada an early lead. Less then three minutes later, Tamps Bay Lightning prospect Brett Connolly pounced on a loose puck with Canada shorthanded and snapped his third of the tournament past Denmark's starter Sebastian Feuk.

Before the period was out, Canada would strike for two more. Mark Stone netted his fifth of the tourney on a turnover at the 16:05 mark and three minutes later, Stone setup linemate Ryan Strome for Canada's fourth goal of the opening period.

Not much changed in the middle stanza, as Harrington scored twenty-five seconds into the second on a blast from the point to make it 5-0 Canada. Stone would pick up his second of the night when he deflected another Harrington point shot past Feuk and Canada was up by six before the five minute mark of the second. Late in the period, Harrington would pick up his third point of the frame when Freddie Hamilton deflected his point shot to give Team Canada a touchdown lead heading into the third.

Denmark showed some early sign of life in the final twenty, when they scored twice in a five and a half minute span. Forward Nicolai Meyer jumped on a loose puck in front of the Team Canada net fired and snapped a shot past goaltender Mark Visentin, to break the netminders shutout bid. Just over five minutes later, Denmark would cut the lead to five when Emil Kristensen deflected Nicklas Jensen's point shot past Visentin on the power play and the lead was down to five. That seemed to wake Canada up and they turned it up a notch over the final twelve minutes and would score three more times.

Brandon Gormley scored two in a four minute span to restore Canada's seven goal bulge and Brendan Gallagher would close out the scoring when he banged in his own rebound, on another breakaway, to give Team Canada a 10-2 victory. The win puts Canada atop Group B with a 3-0 record heading into their yearly New Year's Eve battle with Team USA.

The Americans will play the Czech Republic on Friday afternoon before taking on Team Canada in the most anticipated game of round robin play. With New Year's Day just around the corner, the real competition at the 2012 World Junior Championships is just about to get under way.
